Irving Elementary was one of the Joplin School Districts Schools destroyed in the May 2011 EF-5 Tornado.   The District committed to providing a Safe Room in each of the new buildings as well as a plan to pursue FEMA Safe Rooms for all their facilities.   The Irving Elementary Tornado Community Safe Room is a 5,656 sq ft. Gymnasium serving the Community as a Safe Room and the students as a Gym. A separate Safe Room within the School provides a safe harbor for the students and staff of Irving Elementary.
